I have understood for a very long time that I do not like books that alternate POV and especially those that intertwine past and present. I will read them when the prose is compelling, but this book did not make the grade. So I read only the modern mystery parts, and skipped the rest. That works but the text is short.

Do not begin your Peter May reading with this book. The Lewis Trilogy is far far better.

Entry Island Peter May 9781782062202 Books Reviews

Peter May is an exceptional writer and this novel may appeal to readers with more patience than my own. Don't be fooled though. This is really a ghost story wrapped in a procedural.

A murder on a small island off the coast of Canada brings investigators from the mainland (cue the bad weather). The lead investigator is stunned when he first sees the wife of the murdered man - he believes he knows her.

Bad weather continues when the present narrative stops and the second narrative, in mid 1800's Scotland, begins. And, you guessed it! Back in the day, a peasant boy falls for the daughter of the lord and they are separated, creating turmoil even now.

If you want to be bored, you can't do better than trying to maintain interest as the past and present intertwine, characters in both centuries sharing identical names and as "the woo woo" past collides with the present in gale force winds.

And! Difficult as it may be to believe, the beautiful wife of the murder victim may not be guilty! Please.

Cliches abound! Masked attackers. Power outages. Dark and stormy seas. The lead detective was once married to the CSI officer and, of course, they are assigned to the same case.

I had to wonder if Mr. May simply cut up every other writer's advice and threw each piece into a fishbowl and pulled them out one at a time. "O.K. Bad storm." .... "Portraits of long dead relatives provide clues." .... "Jealousy."... "Masked intruder." ....
"Beautiful wife of deceased" .... "Even looks gorgeous covered in blood..." .... "Hero goes blindly into the hurricane force winds and stormy seas to find the truth..." Sad, really.

And, yet again, editors failed to pick up the misuse of pronouns and verb tenses. Bah!
Fans of Peter May's 'Lewis Man' trilogy will love his latest romp through Scottish lore in 'Entry Island.' This one takes the reader out of the Hebrides and into Canada following forcible evictions of the Scottish people during the historical potato famine years. The story revolves around a troubled man from a future generation who recalls the hundreds year-old diary of his ancestor and the mystery that lies within the diary's pages.

The author is known for his extensive geographical and historical research as well as the depth of characters that come to life as the reader turns the pages. This novel is no exception. As the main character roamed the Magdalen Islands I felt as if I were right in step with him traversing the well worn paths, feeling the wind in my hair and seeing every detail of the vista as surely the author saw and captured it so well on the printed page. Peter May has an uncanny method for blending fact with fiction that lends each of his tales a feeling of such credibility that I often wonder where the facts leave off and the fiction begins. For example, excerpts from the diary referenced throughout this tale are so completely charged with emotion and contain such intimate detail that I was convinced the diary really does exist and was not simply spun from the author's imagination. But then, that's part of the magic of Peter May.

For hardcover book lovers who still enjoy the feeling of a weighty novel on the lap as I do, this one is sure to please at 534 pages. In spite of the heft and depth, I managed to get through it during a solitary, stormy weekend with the howling wind and driving rain providing the perfect backdrop to the story line. And just when I thought I had figured out who the murderer was, the tale took a turn down a different lane - a very satisfying 'whodunnit' on top of the history and geography lesson!

Now that I have devoured this latest from Peter May, I do hope he is busy penning the final installment of the 'Enzo Files' series. I've only been waiting 3 years to find out whodunnit!
No, Peter May is not a new author, but I was looking for one! I love the crime/mystery/thriller genre and must admit to becoming bored with many of the authors I usually read. Same old, same old. But then I found him ...quite by accident, one Peter May, Scottish writer of several novels, plays and TV shows. Once I started reading this stand alone novel (not one of his series), I could not put it down and read "Entry Island" within a couple of days. I loved it. It is fast paced, well thought out and keeps you guessing, all of the things I love about this genre. Above all, unlike some authors of this genre it is extremely well written. The descriptions are fantastic and one feels they are there and very much involved in the drama. I'm not going to tell you the story, because it is so good you need to read it for yourself. I would highly recommend Peter May to all who love this genre, and intend to find and purchase his other books.
I bought this book because my father's family history. His mother was born in the late 1800s on the Magdalene Islands in Quebec on the Scottish side of the islands where this story took place. My grandmother's family moved from the islands when she was young in the early 1900s, but the islands were where the McLean family settled when they left Scotland for Canada.

The author, Mr. May, writes a fabulous tale of the people of the island, how they're perceived by outsiders, and weaves in the isolation of the islands and the Scots who have lived there for many generations. It's a grand story of this small set of islands with two communities separated by language and countries of origin, where outsiders seldom venture.
I have understood for a very long time that I do not like books that alternate POV and especially those that intertwine past and present. I will read them when the prose is compelling, but this book did not make the grade. So I read only the modern mystery parts, and skipped the rest. That works but the text is short.
