This is a good book in a mystery series I am enjoying.

Lily is a hereditary witch, meaning that she has inherited witchy powers; she is not, however, thoroughly trained in their use. This can lead to complications, when she is dragged into paranormal situations and does not always have a good approach...although she is talented, clever and resourceful.

This volume focused on Lily's relationships, as well as the mystery itself. While she started out isolated, she is developing more and more of a family of friends- though her current romance may not last.

The mystery works well, and kept me guessing.

probably not the place to start with the series, though I think it would make sense on its own.

Spellcasting In Silk Witchcraft Mystery Book 7 edition by Juliet Blackwell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I've been following along with the adventures of Lily Ivory since the first book in the series, when our present-day witch-heroine was trying to get her vintage clothing store in Haight-Ashbury off the ground. I liked the story then, and the author has kept the tale engaging throughout the several sequels. It's nothing deep, nothing amazing... just a good page-turning cozy mystery that's fun to read on a lazy summer afternoon.

This time around, Lily is asked to help out with the investigation of what might be considered an obvious suicide (off the Golden Gate bridge) but for the oddity of the victim's visit to a "botanical shop" where items are, literally, flying off the shelves. Naturally, things aren't as obvious as they might appear at first, and Lily has to enlist the help of the "supporting cast" whom we (or at least I) have grown fond of the enigmatic Sailor, her friends in the clothing shop, her always-hungry pig/familiar Oscar, and of course the mysterious Aiden. I was kept guessing all the way through, and didn't begin to figure out the whodunnit until right where I was supposed to.

And, of course, there's plenty of good fashion tidbits, a waft of ocean smell from the San Francisco bay, and the slowly-changing relationships between all the characters. Lily is far from perfect, but she has a wry sense of humor (when she thinks she's threatened, she's unprepared to throw any kind of spell "I was more of a brew-alone-in-my-kitchen-type witch, not so great in an unexpected, thrown-down situation") that makes her real and likable. It all adds up to good, fun fiction -- which is just what we came for.

You wouldn't want to start with this novel, but it's no hardship to pick up Secondhand Spirits, and read from the beginning.
All Lily wants is one day - one day that doesn't involve murder, suspicious deaths, kidnappings, or the like. As quoted by Inspector Carlos Romero ~ "Today's not that day" (Blackwell, J., 2015, pg. 4). The newest mystery involves a suicide that may be anything but, a shop owner jailed for possibly being involved, and a missing child.

As Inspector Romero's unofficial consultant of all things paranormal, he comes to Lily due to sudden and extreme activity in El Pajarito, the store owned by Ursula Moreno. When Ursula is arrested in connection to the "suicide" of Nicky Utley, strange things begin to happen inside the store. Could this be the work of a missing teen or is something else going on inside the store? And why do the goings-on revolve around the magical community as a whole?

I found that Spellcasting in Silk had a couple different storylines. The main one involves the suicide, murder suspicious, and missing teen as I wrote about above. The other part concerns Lily. I feel as if some of the scenes were a set up for what could possible be a huge magical disturbance. I also got the feeling that we're in for surprises down the road concerning Sailor and Lily. This installment in the Witchcraft Mystery series was, even at the end, mysterious in itself. There is something brewing and I only hope that Lily can weather the storm.

Lily is simply an amazing and down-to-earth witch. I have watched her grow so much from book 1 until now. She is embracing who she is finally and allowing others into her life without all of the doubt and suspicion, getting more comfortable with her surroundings in each book. She has friends that accept her for who she is and what she does, a very successful resale shop, and a familiar that sometimes just steals the show. Her brooding companion, Sailor, has some great dialogue and wit. A side note, however; while I enjoy Sailor, I'm still not positive I like him for Lily.

I love the banter between Aidan and Lily. Like Lily, I'm not sure I trust him, but I find his character charming, well-written, and entertaining. Inspector Romero seems to open up a bit more in Spellcasting in Silk, too. I've always like his brief appearances in the series but this installment touches a different side of him.

I absolutely love this series. Each story develops nicely and takes the reader on a brand new adventure in the world of the paranormal. The novels are suitable for anyone who wants to read them - teens, adults who don't like sex or swearing, adult who do like those things but also like the cozy mystery scene, too (like me).

If you're looking for your next cozy series then I highly recommend Juliet Blackwell's Witchcraft Mysteries. They are written well, have great storylines, solid plots, and easy-to-like characters. The dialogue between all characters is smooth and understandable and the novel is an easy, relaxing read.

I find her characters very engaging, and her plots, while wild, are good for this type of mystery. She doesn't take herself too seriously, but the stories are well-told and very entertaining. I say for this kind of mystery, because they're very different from, say, a British DCI series, which can be dark and heavy.
Ms. Blackwell has written another delightful installment in the Witchcraft series. In this book, Lily is challenged in many ways. In most cases, she overcomes the challenge with her growing power. Through the action, she develops a better understanding of her strength and how she can use it. Lily also learns more about relationships--with her boyfriend, his mentor, her familiar, the witchy godfather of the San Francisco area, the homicide detective who requests her assistance, her grandmother, a young natural witch who reminds Lily of herself. Some of her learning is easy, some painful self-discovery, and some is her decision to be the woman/witch she wants to be. I will keep coming back for each new installment as long as Lily Ivory grows and changes. I'm confident that Ms. Blackwell will continue to deliver!
