The Goodbye Look Ross Macdonald Books
Having read all Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer novels, I can't remember being disappointed by any of them.Lately I got the urge to lose myself in Lew Archer's world, which for the most part runs along the coast of southern California between the late '40s and the early '70s.
I found a deal on a hardcover of The Goodbye Look, the plot of which I only vaguely remembered. And now, more than ever, I agree with William Goldman, whose review of the novel included: "The finest series of detective novels ever written by an American."
MacDonald knew all the tricks of suspense and used them so well that I can feel abused when sleep or some other responsibility calls me away from a novel of his. And he rewards us readers with characters whose actions and emotions we understand, sometimes too well. Even if they are more damaged than us, we can't help seeing in them who we could be, but for fortune.
The Goodbye Look may be MacDonald at his best. The way the good guys reveal their badness and the bad guys find their piece of redemption, and even the lesser characters play crucial parts in the intricate story of the wages of sin multiplied by family secrecy--only a true master can create such as world.

The Goodbye Look Ross Macdonald Books Reviews
Ross MacDonald is always an enjoyable read... keeps you engaged with a fun-to-follow puzzle... I like the "voice" of the protagonist, Lew Archer... it is genre, but far better than average a good writer providing good entertainment.
I have read every Lew Archer novel. I wish Ross Macdonald had written many more. Repetitive characters or plots be damned, I can’t get enough of Macdonald’s almost poetic prose. And I wish I had a father like Lew Archer, with his integrity, honesty, passion for justice, and above all sympathy and kind-heartedness.
I just spent the last month reading all eighteen of the Lew Archer novels. It was time well-spent. The combination of literary skill, compelling plots and a first-rate social history of post-war California combine to give the series my highest recommendation. The protagonist is hard-boiled, but hardly a cliche.
This is one of Ross MacDonalds' Lew Archer stories. Lew is a private detective in California in the 50's-70's. I have reread them all now and then over the past 40 years. They are still great stories. I had a complete set of them dating back to the 60's. Somehow I lost "The Goodbye Look" and needed a replacement. Get the whole series If you like detective stories, you will love them all.
The Goodbye Look is one of the best Lew Archer novels by Ross MacDonald. Archer is called to investigate the theft of an antique jewelry box owned by the wealthy Chalmers family. Suspicion quickly falls on the only child, son Nick.
This is one of the three or four best in the Lew Archer series, which is another way of saying that it is one of the ten or so best detective stories ever published. It is also maybe the most complicated of the Archers. There are many characters. I strongly recommend you write them down as they appear. Draw a graph showing who is related to who. For that reason, I do not recommend this as the first Archer novel to read.
The final resolution is not quite what I was hoping. However, it is certainly good and makes sense.
We have here many of the recurring themes that are in all but the earliest Archer novels The private mental hospital. The strange disappearance of someone a generation earlier, probably murdered. Wealthy people who got that way at the ultimate expense of their children.
The only thing this one is missing relative to some of other later novels in the Archer canon is a lot of the incredible off hand descriptions and musings. Ross MacDonald was one of the finest writers - forget detective - that this nation has ever produced. His Archer novels are full of insights and descriptions of amazing power that resonate in the mind. I didn't find quite so many in this one.

I lost track of all the unpleasant characters. The story line held my attention through all the twists and turns. Best to just relax and enjoy.
Archer is a good protagonist with reasonable integrity. I like the treatment of police, neither bad not good, just reasonable people doing a thankless job. A good time passer.
Love every one of his books. He is the 1950's answer to Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammit. His style of writing is almost poetry. He describes a scene and you are there, feeling the air, seeing the moonlight, hearing the ocean waves. You also go along with him as he gathers clues to his investigations. I never figured out one of his endings ahead of time! Throughly enjoyable!
