The Belton estate Anthony Trollope 9781117701967 Books

Will Belton sees his cousin Clara, (not really a close relative) and he falls in love with her at first sight but she is already attracted to her aunt's (not really her aunt) nephew. She likes Will very much, but Will is like a bull in a china shop, he wants her as his wife right away and his impatience drives Clara to be more firmly decided in her mind that she is in love with Captain Aylmer and not her cousin. The novel is a back and forth account of this love triangle and Clara's determination that she will not marry Will. Her father, who at first was opposed to Will as the inheritor of the Belton estate, realizes that Will and Clara must marry so that she would not be left in poverty. Clara has three choices, stay single and poor; marry Aylmer being prepared to accept his family who she dislikes; or marry Will who is gracious, loving, rich, simple and uneducated but smart. Poor Clara is confused and befuddled by well meaning friends and her father but in the end she makes the right choice.

The Belton estate Anthony Trollope 9781117701967 Books Reviews

Book was good! Not the bestl, but entertaining enough! Love Anthony Trollope !!!
The novel is as engaging as I expected, given my love of Trollope's other works, but this version is really terrible- I agree with the other review that the punctuation editting was incredibly distracting. At first, I thought it was an annoying stylistic affectation that most commas, dashes and colons were missing. When I was reading the first chapter, it felt, at times, as though James Joyce had stepped into Trollope's world. Then I saw several odd periods in the midst of sentences and concluded the problem was likely a crappy typesetter and inadequate quality control of the proof. I've never seen this imprint before, but I'll be avoiding it in the future.
The book is unreadable. Obviously it comes from a scan of some published version, then subjected to OCR and printed without ANY copyediting. So many errors and mistakes it is completely valueless. Too much trouble to return it, but a complete waste of money. (And I gave it as a Christmas gift, which was big let-down!!)
Another Trollope you will love. Great book.
Will Belton is one of the best characters ever created by any author I've read! I just loved reading every word about him. The heroine, Clara, is likable, and I enjoyed her, and the ones you love to hate were here as well. But Will Belton was the crown jewel of this story. It was so much fun, and so satisfying, to read about him, and it felt good to love him so much and to be rooting for him. The book moved fast and had no slow parts for me. I'm looking forward to rereading it later when my memory of it dims a bit, because it was just so much fun to read. I gave a great sigh of contentment at the end.
Not Trollope's best novel, but this great author never disappoints. The interlude in the Middle East and Holy Land, while tedious, compared to Mark Twain's unreadable descriptions of the same journeys are palatable. Trollope's characters are fashioned uniquely and are as real today as in the 19th C.
I've been reading through several of Trollope's novels and this is the best one yet. I would even put it up there with my favorites Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell. Really, I could hardly put it down. Well drawn characters and a romance you couldn't figure out how he could make it come right till the end (and very pleasantly done, too). A hero so loveable and sweet he may outclass some of Jane's! Really, you should read this one.
