"...And yet they have never met." This lead in captured my attention. A fantastic story that covers a "sight" that has not been written into fiction nearly enough. The results from each character's ability to support, guide and embrace the other was quite believable and well written. A fantastic foundation was built in this story that sees this ability from all angles, taking it from unbelievable to possibility to believable throughout the story. There were a few scenes that were personally difficult for me to read, which is also high praise for the way this story was written. The reader can actually feel the despair and hopelessness of the victim(s) of a very corrupt, high-profile public official. The anguish is very palpable, and well-written. There is no "bodice-ripping" going on, which for me is an absolute plus! I read a LOT of books (reading is my family's form of "watching" entertainment as we have not had public or cable television in over 18 years), and I prefer to be able to read a book without characters constant "laveing" and "groping" each other every two pages. Good sex scenes that are written without the usual droll/oft-repeated verbiage and making the reader feel like a voyeur is a breath of fresh air; and not having such scenes thrown into a book just to be gratuitous is a huge plus on my part. You can have a "romance" book by expressing all facets of a romance (the development of becoming a couple, laying a clear foundation on which to base a relationship, etc.), not just the sex. A sign of a good "historical" based book is to develop the "it could have happened this way" or "the characters could have done it this way" without boring the reader; Ms. Graham has accomplished this fantastically. If you want exact historical context, I suggest re-reading dry, boring history books. There is nothing juvenile about Ms. Graham's writing style -- I find just the opposite as she does not utilize a writing style, plot coverage and such that can be found in any number of other books (I have a difficult time reading ever so many other authors because their books have been so oft repeated, so this is a huge plus for me) on the market; she has made this story her own. In other words, she didn't just change the names & setting to entertain the innocent; the character development has not been taken from any other story. I do not find any similarity between Ms. Graham's books and Ms. Gabaldon's "Outlander" books at all -- for one, it is not an epic novel; the story is introduced, built and resolved in a perfect number of pages; it is, after all, a "novel," not an "epic."Tags : Under the Same Sky (The MacDonnell Series) [Genevieve Graham] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <span>The year is 1746. Under the Same Sky The MacDonnell Series Genevieve Graham 9780425245231 Books Reviews
I have seen this recommended a while and I liked the premise reading the blurb. One of the few books I bought right from my after reading the sample and I love that it picks right up where I left off. Seamless. I usually order books from my computer, but I just couldn't wait and had to have it.
This was really good. Beautiful language. There is a lot of dark stuff in here though. I mean the Hero survives Culloden and the author doesn't sugarcoat the aftermath. So if one has certain triggers, maybe read some of the spoiler reviews. Violence is there, some of it towards children and women.
Its gritty and beautiful at the same time. The two souls connected across the continents.
Like the ultimate romance, really. What they have to endure to find each other makes you weep. Yet the hope in both is so strong and the believe never really wavers.
I don't know what else to put in here without spoiling too much. Its the journey that is gripping and full of despair and hope.
Its the kind of saga type historical romance I adore and not many of them are written anymore today.
I already have the 2nd on order. Can't wait to read it.
** Read July 2013
This is not time-travel, but it is the same historical time period as Diana's books, and takes place in both the Highlands and the Carolina. The two characters are psychically connected to each other since childhood through their dreams. They cannot touch, but can warn each other of danger. Each experiences unspeakable danger, violence, and personal loss. Even after they find each other there is still a lot of heart-stopping danger. The book does have a happy ending, but it definitely takes awhile to get there.
I don't usually like book with this much violence, especially against women, but this one drew me in and demanded I see it through. I have read quite a bit about the Scottish battles against the English so I know that historically it was pretty accurate. The book had a very sympathetic portrayal of Native culture which was wonderful to see in a book with some much violence. There are a least two more books about the minor characters in this book, and I do want to read them
